I have quite a few books on my bookshelf. I’m not pleased – in fact I’m slightly embarrassed to say – that the biggest set on there is the Laurell K. Hamilton Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series which resulted from a stint/binge from a couple years ago.
Yeah, I know.
If you’ve every read her, you’ll understand what I mean. They embody everything vampires probably are and what the Twilight series avoided for the trilogy and then for the +1 suddenly decide to embrace it (going to the repercussions angle): sex.
So when my mother comes in today to grab a book to read while overseeing my brother’s piano practice, the one book she would obviously choose is Micah, the 50-page fluff novel that happens not only happens to be one of the series also happens to also read like porn without pictures.
I don’t even remember why I got it. In fact, I don’t even know why the lady wrote it. And any other book from the series would have been better since they have tiny font, are long, and actually has the occasional sighting of the bunny called plot. In translation, this means mother would have given up before she got very far.
But Micah, well, Micah gets its own genre…
Naturally, flustered and not eager to let my own mother read a book like that to practice her English, I quickly asked where my copy of Howl’s Moving Castle was.
It was a really close shave.
Hmmm, reminds me of the excerpts from novels that are featured in my Cosmopolitan subscription. I certainly hope my mother doesn’t go flipping through them.
Haha. I remember when I figured out Cosmopolitan was basically all about sex; and to think I had originally bought a copy for fashion tip :[
All bad.
Hahah. Oh man, I’ve avoided shameful fluff novels like the plague most of my life, but one of my friends just reads them by the ton, and she got me hooked on a vampire series that sounds EXACTLY like that. I read straight through all of them and then had to read some Oscar Wilde to remind myself books aren’t really like that, lmao.
But once in a while, they’re just a little bit fun to breeze through.
Yeah, if I knew more people knew just how embarrassing and fluffy those books are, I wouldn’t dare put them front and center on my shelf (they are so many of them!) But hey, guilty pleasures are just so satisfying sometimes.
Hmm…other vampire series? Would that be the True Blood series (those Charlaine Harris ones?) or something even I haven’t heard of, lol?
Haha. Those kinds of books definitely need to be viewed in a certain light. But yay for guilty pleasures!
And yes it was the True Blood series. A couple of my friends were reading these types of books and I just really wanted something I could breeze through. I think the real sell for me though was that it was an HBO series. As a big fan of ROME and Deadwood, I figured if HBO took a shine to it, it may have enough substance for me to enjoy.
But I read in one of your other comments how it was better than Twilight. If there was one downside to the series was that I couldn’t help but draw comparisons to Twilight, which I hadn’t seen but still. It was enough to give the whole thing a sour taste.
I did read it all
. As a guilty pleasure it served its purpose.
I don’t think I’ll ever read any of those kinds of books.
It’s not my cup of tea.
I did catch my niece reading something like that last summer, though. I didn’t even know she read books!
Well, they’re good once in a (long) while. It’s like chick lit, only more hardcore and…yeah. Actually, the only thing I can say in defense of them is that they’re better than Twilight in that at least they have personality.
Haha, I see! I don’t read too much chick lit books, I’m more into the YA books. But anything better than Twilight sounds okay to me. I refuse to read Twilight. xD

Ahahaha. My mom rather likes mystery novels when she reads English books. And I don’t. So she knows better than to look through my bookshelf.
